colorINI is a plugin that enables color-coding for your INI and STR files (Note that lua & xml files are directly handled by Notepad++).
Color-coding means that no longer will you have to look at dull code and get all moody when the game refuses to boot.

Make sure you first and foremost download Notepad++. colorINI is merely a plugin to that nifty program.

Then, you can install colorINI by downloading the zip file called colorINI.zip and following the instructions in the installer.

You can then manually apply the patch by replacing the existing one in your Application Data folder.
Find the Notepad++ Application Data folder: to do so, type %APPDATA% in your "Run" window.
The patch brings new functionalities, such as grouping (being able to contract certain bits of code), but is currently instable, and as such, should not be downloaded unless you are aware of the risks of extreme annoyance. Ye be warned.

This is the ONLY way to mod.

Even better because my mouse has buttons that go forward and backward on the files. :D

Great tool!

"There's definitely no other way to edit INI files than with ColorINI!"

Indeed - an excellent tool, highly recommended.

Actually, it all depends on how you like to work. I always extract files and place them in folders, and only compile .big files once in a while. There I'm forced to use Notepad (in this case, Notepad++) to edit my files.

Using FinalBig is a good idea but less simple than working with extracted files IMO. Can you edit multiple files at once for instance? Can you make a search in all the files?

I guess it's about how you feel with modding. If you're comfortable with FinalBig, then stick to it by all means

i find it very confusing, i think finalbig editor is better because its more organised like just say i wanted to change command points i would go to playertemplate.ini.
but alot more errors occur using finalbig :(

Indeed I meant it figuratively ;-)

I think 2playgames meant that colorINI offers far more comfort than FinalBIG or notepad do.

Notepad++ offers tabs, sessions, break points, advanced search ... colorINI brings code-coloring.

The colorINI helped me to understand how the ini's files work... It's really a great tool!
