Firstly, you'll have to get your hands on several things.

These tools are absolutely required to work with your video and your audio files. And what's best is that they are all entirely free.

VirtualDub

Quote

VirtualDub is a video capture/processing utility for 32-bit Windows platforms (95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP), licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images.

As you've understood from that paragraph, VirtualDub will mostly be used to work with your video.
I would not be surprised if it was already installed on your computer, as it is a very popular tool, being open-source.
You may download VirtualDub from its Official website.

On2 Codec

For its videos, EA has chosen to make use of the VP6 codec, developed by On2, one of DivX's competitors. However, EA uses a specifically modified version of the codec, which rendered us unable to add any videos ingame using On2's codec straight away.
On2 is known for its work with Adobe in developing the Flash 8 video codec, now widely used in websites such as YouTube.

The VP6 codec has been including in the package you may find in the references.

SoundeXchange

SoX, the swiss army knife of sound processing programs. SoX is a command line utility that can convert various formats of computer audio files in to other formats. It can also apply various effects to these sound files during the conversion. As an added bonus, SoX can play and record audio files on several unix-style platforms.

Being command line based (meaning that it lacks any user-friendly graphical interface), we will only use SoX with Siberian_GRemlin's VP6Builder.
SoX is included in the package, and its official website may be found here

Audacity

Quote
Audacity is a free, easy-to-use audio editor and recorder for Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems. You can use Audacity to:

  • Record live audio.
  • Convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs.
  • Edit Ogg Vorbis, MP3, and WAV sound files.
  • Cut, copy, splice, and mix sounds together.
  • Change the speed or pitch of a recording.
  • And more! See the complete list of features.

  • Audacity will come in great use to edit your audio. You may download it from its official site.

    VP6Builder & SoundeXchange GUI

These 2 tools have been developed by Siberian_GRemlin to help us convert our videos to EA's VP6 format.

SoundeXchange GUI is a graphical interface for SoX, which has been presented above, and will allow you to easily convert your audio files to be usable with your videos ingame.

Both are included in our pack.

    EAConv.exe

The name is quite nice to look at, but unfortunately, the tool is somewhat hard to use, lacking any graphical interface.
The last page will teach you how to use this program to convert EA's videos to another video format.

It's also included in our pack.

    Palantir Video Converter

This tool was developed by Phil to add the alpha channel required for Palantir videos to a regular EA VP6 file. It does not have a graphical interface, but you can find detailed usage instructions on page 6.
You can find the download link in the references below.

"as well as selecting the VP6 0 format when encoding to ensure that the alpha is supported"

Don't you mean VP6 1 for alpha? If I'm not mistaken (and correct me if I am), VP6 0 is the one that doesn't support alpha, that's why palantir videos use VP6 1.

Great tutorial! I'm going to be making my own videos for my mod, so thanks for the information on it. I didn't think that it would be this complicated!
